The goal of my version of the Kalahoiya Coat of Arms was to incorporate Andaman culture into the culture that we have cultivated as a newly merged tribe. I brought in older, more natural elements such as the wooden texture and cave painting inspired line drawings to blend with the modern elements of our tribal buff and vector drawings of the panther to create a unique spin on the coat of Arms.
Starting inside the shield, I decided to incorporate the official seal of the Andaman Islands on the top left corner while representing their official bird, the Andaman Wood Pigeon, on the bottom right corner. Both of these symbols are represented in a very simplistic and obvious way, to represent the simpler form of lifestyle of the Andamanese people as well as to ensure that these symbols were understood by some of my not as intelligent tribe mates (just kidding!) Dividing the shield in two jaggered pieces is our tribe buff. Although in theory we are a merged tribe, the divide within the shield represents the divides forming within our tribe. A seemingly unified tribe metaphorically torn apart by the buffs that we wear. Lines have been drawn, no pun intended, and the game has definitely become more cut throat. Although there are divides within our tribe, the images are drawn in white to represent purity, as we all were well intentioned in just playing a fun game when we arrived.
The black panthers holding up the shield on each side represents the ferocity and drive of my tribe mates. Panthers are intimidating and dangerous creatures, representative of the Andaman lifestyle, as well as the backstabbing that has already occurred within the game. Although deceitful, panthers are also known to be extremely powerful and protective, two qualities that our each one of my tribe mates exudes and our tribe could not survive without. This juxtaposition led me to force the panthers to hold up the shield as a support system, as without this drive our tribe would fail. The panthers are black to represent our new tribe color and their eyes are red to represent the savages found on the Andaman Islands. There are two panthers mirrored on each side of the shield to represent the symmetry found in most traditional coat of arms.
Finally, as Bengali is the dominant and most spoken language in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, I have placed this season’s tagline, ‘The Game Evolves’, in Bengali under the shield. The tagline is on a wooden base to mirror the base of the shield and in white text to mirror the images. I kept the coat of arms seemingly simple, however symbolically complex to mirror the true underlined complexities of iSurv1vor.
